Removing Vinyl Tile and Adhesive

Even the toughest flooring materials wear and need to be replaced after time. Removing worn vinyl tiles and old adhesive is a labor intensive process that can be made easier with the help of a Dremel Multi-Max tool. For this project we'll be using a Dremel Multi-Max MM40, a rigid scraper blade MM600 and an MM920 carbide rasp. This project can be completed using any Dremel Multi-Max oscillating tool. The MM40 tool's quick lock accessory change system makes placing the rigid scraper blade easy. Turn the quick lock lever, slide the accessory, into place. Drop it onto the pins return the quick lock lever to its locked position and you're ready to go. Begin scraping from an exposed edge if you can work the blade from side to side under the tile occasionally lifting the blade. To promote easy separation between the tile and floor, remove broken tiles segments from your work space as you progress. The flooring adhesives here have been aged to the point of brittleness, but the rigid scraper can cut and remove fresher adhesive.

For best results try coating the scraper blade in petroleum jelly to keep it from getting gummed up. Changing between the scraper and carbide rasp is a breeze using quick lock. The carbide rasp is great for aggressively removing material like this old adhesive or thin set and it's unique triangular shape allows it to work right into tight corners. Multi-Max tools don't pick up a lot of dust so most of the material you remove will remain in your workspace. Vacuum is needed until you've completely exposed your sub-floor so that when you apply new adhesive and tile your new tiles will be level with any that remain.
