Learn how to replace a broken floor tile using the Dremel 4000.

We're using a Dremel 4000 with a rout removal attachment model #568 and grout removal bit #570. To cut the tile, we're using a Right-Angle attachment model #575 and EZ Lock #EZ545 cutting wheel and an EZ Lock Mandrel #EZ402. This project can also be completed with any Dremel variable or Dremel Two-Speed rotary tool that works with all standard attachments. The Dremel Multi-Max tool will be used to remove all thin set material with the Diamond Sandpaper -MM900 and hook and loop pad, MM11.

We'll be starting by removing grout using the Dremel 4000 to remove the grout around the broken tile. With the tool unplugged, insert your bit, screw on the grout removal attachment and set your tool to a speed between 15,000 and 20,000 RPM. The angle of the grout removal attachment will let the bit work at peak performance. Slowly pull never push the bit through the old grout, being careful not to knick the tile. Their are two guide points on the attachment that'll help you stay between the tiles. Be sure not to dig too deeply on the first pass as this could damage the bit. To remove more grout after the first pass, adjust the guide to a greater depth on the second pass. To remove more grout onto the first pass adjust the guide to a greater depth on the second pass. To remove grout from a corner, remove the attachment and simply use the bit in the tool. After all the surrounding grout has been removed, use a hammer, chisel, and broom to remove all the old tile and dust.

Now you're ready to remove the remaining thin-set material with the Dremel Multi-Max tool. Attach the Sanding pad and Grinding paper. Work away any old material with the sander. Remove access material so the new tile sits flush with the other tiles. You may need to cut your tile before replacing it. We'll be doing this once again using the Dremel 4000. To begin make sure your floor tile is secure, we suggest using the Dremel Multi-Vise. Mark your desired cut being cutting using the EZ545 Wheel and Right-Angle attachment with your high speed rotary tool set to a speed of no more than 20,000 RPM. Using two hands to firmly grip and guide the tool, start the tool away from the tile and slowly beging your cut. Ease into your cut, making sure to keep the tool level and without bending the wheel. Applying light pressure, make a smooth and slow cut through the tile. You'll see that excess pressure is not necessary. Keep your cut deliberate, but light. Now your new tile is ready to be placed and grouted.

Here's some additional thoughts on replacing floor tile. Older houses may have floor tiling with metal spacers in the grout. Moving the tool slowly and constantly monitoring the feel of the cut and performance of the tool will help you avoid damaging your bit. On larger grout removal jobs, you may have to change bits as they wear down. One and two rated tiles for floors or walls should be cut with the EZ Lock Diamond Wheel #EZ545. Most wall tiles have a rating of 3 and can be cut with a one eighth inch cutting Bit #562.
