Acura SUV-X: Honda wants a slice of the premium CUV market too The Acura SUV-X sits in amongst a host of small-mid sized SUV launches in Shanghai. Along with the BMW X4, Mercedes GLA and DS Wild Rubis there are a number of Chinese SUVs being launched in this segment. Acura has been hit-and-miss for a while with its concepts and production cars and this concept continues that trend – in that parts of it hit the bullseye, and parts of its design confuse.Proportionally and in its positioning it’s very much on the money. Its proportions are quite neat, quite premium.Similarly the detailing is well worked – not the disconnected A-pillar, the clear cover over the license plate holder and the interesting outlet detail on the horizontal surface of the fender. Yet the surfacing is fussy. One gets the sense the car has not been edited down enough. But at least the designers and modelers clearly had a lot of fun with it, and perhaps with a bit more editing – as this car moves toward the production model it clearly signals is coming – it could become Acura’s most successful design of recent times, and help the brand grow by being present in a market that right now is mushrooming right around the world.
