It is OK to drool. After all, the new 2019 Audi RS 5 Sportback is the sport-utility vehicle to best all sport-utility vehicles thanks to its blend of stunning performance, sleek design, and sport Quattro all-wheel drive in a single delicious package.Ground clearance, obviously, isn’t much to brag about, the better to keep the center of gravity as low as possible for astounding cornering capability, but you were never really planning to go off-roading in a silly crossover or SUV anyway, were you? Trust me. You don’t want a crossover. You want this. All kidding aside, the Audi RS 5 Sportback is a pure performance vehicle. Take one A5 Sportback, sprinkle it with magic Audi Sport dust, and you get the spectacular RS 5 Sportback. Launched at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, the RS 5 Sportback made its global debut in Gotland Green paint, which is a deep, rich, earthy hue. The huge wheels, which hearken back to the much-loved 5-arm rotor design, add significant appeal. Visual cues defining the RS 5 Sportback include a lower stance by 7 mm, subtle flares for the fenders that widen the car by 15 mm, matte-finish aluminum-optic exterior detailing, and a unique honeycomb grille. High-gloss black coats the lower side sills and the rear spoiler, and the RS 5 Sportback has a unique diffuser panel between its oval exhaust outlets. Inside, the car gets sport seating with RS embossed into the honeycomb-pattern leather, a bespoke flat-bottomed steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather, carbon fiber trim, simulated suede door panel inserts, and stainless steel pedal covers.Under the hood is where you’ll find the best stuff, in the form of a twin-turbocharged, 2.9-liter V6 engine. It churns out 444 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter peaking from 1,900 rpm to 5,000 rpm. To minimize turbo lag, the turbochargers are tucked into the engine’s “V” for optimum performance. A performance-tuned 8-speed automatic transmission shunts the power to all four of the RS 5 Sportback’s wheels through a Quattro all-wheel-drive system with a self-locking center differential and a sport rear differential. Under normal driving conditions, 60 percent of the engine’s output flows to the rear wheels. Depending on how the car is driven, more power is transferred rearward, and can be distributed to one or the other of the car’s rear wheels. Together, these components produce 60 mph in less than four seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph. Choose the optional Dynamic Plus option package, and Audi raises terminal velocity to 174 mph. In addition to a 7-mm suspension drop, the RS 5 boasts an available sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control. Audi also redesigned the RS 5 Sportback’s front suspension in order to place the car’s steering rack direct at the front wheel centers for improved steering and handling. One of the most appealing things about the new RS 5 Sportback is its sporty back. Audi calls this a 5-door coupe, and the entire rear end opens wide to accept 21.8 cu.-ft. of luggage beneath its shapely hatch. Fold the rear seats down and this rakish, racy Audi totes 35 cu.-ft. of cargo. This impressive level of utility is just one of the many beautiful things about the new 2019 Audi RS 5, which currently faces no direct competition in its quest for customers seeking power, performance, style, and capacity. Sure, you could get more room by choosing a taller, heavier, more ponderous SUV, but why?
