Borgward, the historically-German brand that’s today Chinese, has unveiled two new models to its lineup, in the form of the handsome BXi7 all-electric SUV, and the puke-inducing, god-awful BX6… thing, which we’ll get to momentarily after we’ve controlled the sick. The BXi7, the one we’d rather focus on, takes the handsome and well-proportioned BX7 SUV that’s already doing quite well in China, ditches the internal-combustion gubbins, and replaces it with an all-electric powertrain that’s perfect for its home market. The BXi7 is the first fully-electric model from the marque, with two electric motors (presumably one on each axle) capable of up to 390Nm of torque (though no details on power, presently). The battery pack (also unspecified) endows the BXi7 a cruising range of 375km on a full charge, while the century sprint is dispatched in 7.9-seconds. V-Max is abetted at 195km/h. Perhaps more importantly, the battery can be charged up to 80% from flat in just 45-minutes via a fast-charger. Onto the BX6. Looking like someone dropped a saloon car onto an SUV's ladder-frame, the BX6 is perhaps the worst iteration of the dramatically-roofed high-riding passenger vehicle yet. Where cars like the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Coupé and BMW X4 do better jobs of marrying an interesting roofline to an SUV’s ride height, the BX6 is just terrible. Making it worse are the other details, though their tragic nature have more to do with how they’re described rather than their actual execution. Borgward says that the BX6 sports “eagle-eye headlights” and “eagle-wing LED taillights,” though we have no idea what they’re talking about. At least the 19-inch alloy wheels look snazzy, if a bit derivative. Under the bonnet, it’s not bad news though (thankfully). A 2.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol mill puts out 165kW and 300Nm, enough for a compact like the BX6. Power will be sent to all-four wheels via a “fast-acting” all-wheel drive system, mated to a standard six-speed automatic. Borgward is an interesting company to say the least, with handsome looking cars, impressive build quality (based on what we’ve seen ourselves), and strong value. However, if the BX6 is any indication of what’s to come, this company might already be in regression
